Artist statement

I photograph the point where an ordinary moment begins to feel unreal.

I am Kerkko Nieminen, a photographer originally from Lahti, Finland. I move wherever the work and curiosity take me, across Finland and beyond. Separable is my evolving collection of portraits, public encounters, private rooms and nights shaped by stage light.

I am drawn to people as they move between being seen and disappearing: a performer turning into the light, a face divided by shadow, friends forgetting the camera, or a solitary figure held briefly by the surrounding city.

My photographs move between observation and atmosphere. I want them to retain the noise, stillness, uncertainty and tenderness of the moment—not only what happened, but what it felt like to be there.

The series titles come from albums that matter to me. Music is part of the way I edit: it gives images a rhythm, allows different years and places to meet, and turns separate photographs into something closer to a remembered world.
